A school maintenance technician performs a wide range of tasks to ensure that a school building and its grounds are in good repair and operating efficiently. This may include repairing and maintaining equipment and systems, such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and security systems; performing minor renovations and remodeling projects; and performing routine maintenance tasks to prevent equipment breakdowns.
In addition to these technical tasks, a school maintenance technician may also be responsible for managing the inventory, ordering supplies and materials needed for maintenance and repair work, and keeping track of maintenance schedules and records. In some cases, a maintenance technician may also oversee a team of other maintenance staff, providing guidance and direction as needed.
To succeed in this role, a school maintenance technician should have a strong technical aptitude and be knowledgeable about various repair and maintenance techniques. They should also be able to work independently, follow instructions, and possess sound problem-solving and communication skills. Sometimes, a maintenance technician may need to be available to respond to emergency repairs outside of regular business hours.
