Core Competencies: Communication

Posted by HBM Operations on Dec 22, 2022 7:22:00 AM

A facilities manager with strong communication skills effectively conveys information, coordinates activities, and manages stakeholder expectations. Some critical aspects of the communications competency for facilities management include:

  1. Selecting situation-appropriate media and techniques for communications: Different stakeholders may require different communication methods. They should be able to use the proper communication method best suited for the audience and the message.
  2. Managing and overseeing the development and use of a facility communications plan: A facility communications plan is a document that outlines the messages, reminders, mission, and vision for a facility, as well as the appropriate media and techniques for communicating with stakeholders. A facilities management professional should be able to develop and implement a communications plan that effectively communicates essential information to stakeholders.
  3. Preparing and delivering messages that achieve the intended results: A facilities management professional should be able to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including facility staff, the public, senior management, customers, and boards of directors. This may involve preparing reports, promoting facility management information and recommendations, and managing stakeholder perceptions and expectations.

Overall, effective communication is an essential skill for a facilities manager, as it enables them to effectively coordinate and manage a facility's operations and maintenance and build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders.
